ncm2021 Diara Jackson

Image
A surprising thing happened when Diara Jackson-Davis began volunteering with Nabhi Christian Ministries to complete a community service mandate for 9th grade graduation: She overcome her shyness and found love among a new group of people. It’s a good lesson for a young girl to learn. Not long ago, Diara was a remarkable student, but she worried about pleasing others.Diara, 15, grew up in Penn Hills, where she made straight As at Propel Braddock Hills … until she received her first B in fifth grade. She remembers that day well: carrying her report card home on the bus, nervously trying to think of a way to keep her mom from seeing it. But when she got home, she simply handed her mom the report card and burst into tears, apologizing. She told her mom that her teacher probably gave her a B because she didn’t like Diara. “But my mom hugged me and told me a B isn’t a bad grade, and that I hadn’t let her down,” she says. Today, as a 9th grader, Diara still makes As and Bs in her classes and

Honoree George Spencer, Sr NABHI 2021 Lifetime Achievement award

Image
In all that he does, George C. Spencer Sr. gladly gives of himself to others. “I look at the things I do as being a byproduct of who I am in Christ. They tend to be things I feel a calling to,” says Spencer, 66, of Wilkinsburg, the 2021 recipient of Nabhi Christian Ministries’ Lifetime Achievement Award. And Spencer’s achievements are many. Since 2014, he has been an elder at Covenant Church of Pittsburgh, where he was married in October 2020 to Deborah L. Perry Spencer. He is a board member of Hosanna House Inc., a Boy Scout leader and Little League coach, a member of Wilkinsburg School District’s Strategic Planning Committee, and chairman of the Community Policing Committee for Wilkinsburg Weed and Seed. He was a fellow (2000-2002) with the Carnegie Mellon University Community Think Tank, and a fellow with the Pilgrim Institute’s Repairing the Breach. In 2010, he was named an Urban Hero by the Center for Urban Biblical Ministry. In his professional career, Spencer rose through the ra

shortly after earning her master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Johns Hopkins University. “I began providing workshops and I ended up writing a course that I thought would be good for freshmen, so they would start thinking about their careers and what they’d need to do to move forward,” she says. “I showed it to the director of the department and said, ‘Would you share it with the dean and see if he would approve it as a one-credit class that freshmen would take?’ Eventually my boss said the dean wanted to talk with me. The Dean said, ‘You want to offer this for one credit? There is no way I would ask anybody to do this for one credit — I’m willing to put it forward for three credits.’ And that was one of the largest accomplishments in my life. I had written a three-credit course — I was so happy. ”It showed her the value in grabbing opportunity, something she has urged others to do over the years: “Be prepared, be bold, take a chance, ask questions,” she says. Honoree Maurita Bryant for NABHI Lifetime Achievement Award 2021

Image
If all police officers had the empathy and ethics that Maurita Bryant put to the job, America might have fewer problems today with policing. Bryant, of Homewood, retired from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police in 2016 after 39 years, having achieved the post of assistant chief of investigations, and then retired again in July 2020 from the Allegheny County Police as assistant superintendent of the uniformed division. More than half her years in law enforcement were spent in supervisory positions, a nod to her knowledge and innate ability to be a good cop — a job she never really aspired to until the opportunity arose. Now, she teaches ethics and moral values to cadets at the County Police Academy and teaches implicit bias as part of the Pittsburgh bureau’s Procedural Justice Committee. She has taught for Penn State, and taught overseas, and recently obtained a teaching position with Indiana University of Pennsylvania. “I teach what it takes to be a good police officer, and the pitfalls th

Honoree Rod Doss NCM Speech

Image
Rod Doss understood early in his sales career that it is important to learn about clients, and to this day he much prefers talking with people about their stories than talking about himself. But Doss, of Ben Avon Heights, the editor and publisher of the New Pittsburgh Courier, does have a remarkable life story of his own. He grew up in East Liberty as one of eight children born to Eli Doss, a steelworker who died when Doss was just 13, and Earline Doss, a stay-at-home mom who made sure her children saw life as a rich experience. “We were very fortunate that we had a mother who exposed us to a lot of things in life certainly, good music and reading,” Doss says. “She was a great cook and very social, so she had friends come in all the time. And, of course, she was focused on making sure we kids went to church on Sunday, without fail. All those things came together to make us, ultimately, who we became.” Doss attended Friendship Grade School and Peabody High School, and at age 19 went to
